Philosophy of Care
-
Birth is a very significant event in a woman's life. The process of
pregnancy and birth can be seen as a physical, emotional and spiritual journey.
- Birth is a normal physiological process. We balance a strong belief in
the ability of women to birth their baby naturally with the knowledge that
sometimes, some women may need some help. Using this wisdom carefully and
appropriately is at the core of excellent midwifery practice.
- Midwifery is an art and a science which seeks to create a trusting,
therapeutic relationship with a woman. Through this relationship the midwife
provides continuity, information and support throughout the birth journey.
Guiding Principles
- HoE Midwives are committed to practicing midwifery to high professional
standards and in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Rules and
Standards of Care.
- The underlying principles which guide the way we practice are respect,
integrity, honesty and loving kindness.
- The meetings between the midwife and the woman are seen as a meeting of
two experts. HoE Midwives respect the fact that every woman is an expert in her
own life and has her own priorities and concerns. As midwives we bring to the
meeting professional knowledge, skills and experience.
- The woman has the right to choose what is important for her and her baby.
HoE midwives support women with their informed choices regarding pregnancy,
labour, birth and early mothering whenever possible. To assist in this process
HoE midwives aim to provide balanced evidence-based information and opportunities
for questioning, discussion and reflection.
